Baillie Windfarm, Bardnaheigh Farm, Westfield, Thurso

On Tuesday 15th January 2008, Highland Council decided to oppose Baillie Windfarm. There will probably be a Public Local Inquiry now.

This decision was more important than it seemed since only a week earlier the Scottish Government launched the "National Planning Framework 2" consultation document on planning issues for the next 30 years, across all fields. The Energy section sets out proposals to upgrade the power transmission system from Lewis to Ullapool, Shetland to Orkney to Dounreay to Beauly, around the East Coast and on to England. All to harness "renewable energy", and designated as "national developments".

If Baillie Windfarm had not been opposed by the Council, it would have lent credence to the Government's bankrupt energy policy. As it is, it places a small impediment in its way, and buys a little time for the growing numbers of very concerned people to make their voices heard.

If you have not yet objected to Baillie Windfarm, it is not too late to do so, it will still be counted.

The proposed turbines appear smaller because they will average 9 km away whereas the existing ones average only 3 km away. They are in fact considerably larger, being 125m high compared with the present ones of only 68m.
Causeymire turbines are just under 100m high.

This is taken from the Environmental Statement Viewpoint 5. The image in the ES shows indistinct turbines. Imagine looking towards the Causewaymire Windfarm from Mybster Crossroads. Then imagine that the turbines are 17 metres taller overall and the sweep of the blades is 12 metres wider. Then imagine putting them between 60 and 120 metres higher up on a hillside above you.
